CONSERVING WATER

Water Saving Tips

In The Home
  • Install low=flow faucet aerators - they can cut water flow in half without reducing water pressure.
  • Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of running the tap to reach a desired coldness.
  • Wait until your dishwasher is full before you run it.
  • Adjust the water level to the size of your laundry load.
  • If you need a new washing machine, consider buying the front loading type - it uses about 30% less water
  • and saves energy too!
  • Try not to run the water while you are brushing your teeth.
  • Install and use low-flow showerheads and limit your showers to 10 minutes and under.
  • If you hear your toilet continue to run after flushing, it probably needs adjusting or some replacement parts.
In The Garden
  • Water your lawn and garden early in the morning or late in the day (after 4 pm).
  • Place your sprinkler so that the water stays on the grass and is not running off on the sidewalk or your driveway.
  • Use a raingauge or a timer on your sprinkler - you should only need to water 1/4" to 1/2" (approx. 1/2 hour) twice a week.
  • Consider purchasing a rainbarrel. Water directly from a hose is very cold and can shock your garden. Don't forget to install mosquito netting.
  • Clean your driveway with a broom instead of a hose.
  • Consider aerating your lawn in the spring - this will better allow water to reach grass roots.
  • Leave grass clippings behind when you mow your lawn. They help to retain moisture and will return nutrients as they decompose.
  • Cut grass to approximately 2 inches. This will also help retain moisture and will encourage root growth.
